Procedures and Criteria for site content.

Photo Criteria

In preparing photographic images for inclusion in the site, the following criteria should be followed whenever possible:

Sample: schoolstreet1.jpg at 100% (this image appears in http://www.jaffreyhistory.org/images/photos/schools/Ph0001.php).
Format: jpg
Resolution: 300 dpi
Max width: 550 pixels (1.833 inches)
Max height: 800 pixels (2.667 inches)
Actual width: 550 pixels (1.833 inches)
Actial height: 375 pixels (1.251 inches)
File Size:  419K Grayscale

The maximum width and height is a function of how the JaffreyHistory.org website appears in a typical monitor. Not exceeding either of these dimensions results in an image that can be seen on the screen without scrolling.

Images should always be properly sized prior to inclusion. If not, files will result that are unnecessarily large.

Procedures for including Publications, Documents and Maps for Viewing and Downloading

For items such as books, pamphlets, individual documents, etc., that are to be viewed and/or downloaded do the following:
    • Using Photoshop, scan each page at 300 dpi (8-bit grayscale or 24-bit color) and scale accordingly (try to have the size in pixels the same as what you want it to be on the webpage, i.e. don't create too big a file if the size is not needed).
    • Save as a tiff file.
    • Place into a new InDesign document. If a single-page item one can save the scan in Photoshop as a Photoshop pdf.
    • Export to a pdf choosing the smallest size (but not for items that you will want to enlarge. See below)

The pdf file is then uploaded to the site. A pdf file will be smaller in size than an image that is kept as a jpg. It will also zoom better than a jpg. This is important for large maps which one will want to zoom in in order to read names and other see other details. An example of this is the Gibbs map under 'Maps.'

Here are detailed settings and procedures:

Place contrasting color sheet over pamphlet or page so that edges of original can be determined in scan.
Photoshop >File >Import > Epson Perfection 4490
With the settings below the marquee will equal the Document Size. If need be move the marquee without changing its size to enclose the page you want to scan.

Scanner settings (Epson 4490):
            Mode: Professional
            Document Type: Reflective
            Document Source: Document Table
            Auto Exposure Type: Document
            Image type: Black & White
            Scanning quality: Best
            Resolution: 300 dpi
Document Size: page size of original (e.g. 6x9)
            Target Size: original
            Scale: 100%
            Trimming: On
            Threshold: 110

Rotate scan if necessary.
Save as a tiff file (Image Compression-None; Pixel Order=Interleaved; Byte Order: Macintosh.
Auto Resolution settings (under Image Size > Auto…) Screen 133 lines/inch. Quality=best).
Place in an InDesign document.
Select image and scale it to 134% or to whatever scale is required to fit the image into the space available. Whatever this is, it should remain the same throughout the document so that the text is always the same size and located in the same position.
Do any minor rotation adjustment of the image in InDesign using the rotation tool.
Once scaled the edges of the image can be cropped to correspond to the InDesign margins (in this case .7 top, all others 1.0 inches).
Convert the InDesign document to a pdf. > File > Adobe PDF Presets > Press Quality
Note: For whatever reason, placing the tiff into InDesign and then converting to pdf results in a much smaller pdf file than going directly from Photoshop (via 'save as') to pdf. (For one map, using the InDesign route resulted in a 2.7 meg file versus a 12.2 meg file going directly from Photoshop). Another reason for creating the pdf via InDesign is that the resulting pdf holds together much better as the image is made larger.

Thumbnails. To make thumbnails of maps and publications (as shown, for example, in http://www.jaffreyhistory.org/MAPS/historic/monadshaded/monadshaded.php or http://www.jaffreyhistory.org/PUBLICATIONS/StevensDiary.php) open image in Photoshop. > Image > Image Size. Set resolution at 100 and document width at 2 inches (=200 pixels). Save as a jpg.

Combining Maps. To combine two maps (for instance, two USGS maps to come up with a map of all of Jaffrey), do the following: Create a new PS document (resolution 300, RGB color, 8 bit, H=8", W=10". Open first map in PS, Select All, Copy, and Paste into the new PS document. Create a new layer. Open the second map in PS, Select All, Copy and Paste into new layer. Adjust the two maps so that they stitch together. Adjust color of each as needed. Flatten image. Save as a tiff file.

Scanning Procedures

These settings are for an Epson 4490 Perfection scanner and some will not apply to other brands of scanners.

POSTCARDS, PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS, SNAPSHOTS, MAPS, LINE ART, TEXT

Mode: Professional
Document type: Reflective
Image type: 24-bit color or 8-bit grayscale or black & white line art (i.e. bitmap)
Scanning quality: Best
Resolution: 600 dpi. (This resolution is for the 'archive' copy which is kept in a raw form [the only image alterations being cropping and rotation]. From this copy a jpg adhering to the criteria above under 'Photo Criteria' is produced for inclusion in the website.)
Target size: original
Scale: 100% in preview, then indicate higher % for scan depending on needs and requirements. The smaller the original, the greater the scaling.
Trimming: On
Unsharp mask filter: Checked
Descreening filter: Unchecked (unless screened original)
Grain reduction: Unchecked
Dust removal: Unchecked

35mm SLIDES

Mode: Professional
Document type: Film
Film type: Positive Film
Image type: 24-bit color
Scanning quality: Best
Resolution: 600 dpi. (This resolution is for the 'archive' copy which is kept in a raw form [the only image alterations being cropping and rotation]. From this copy a jpg adhering to the criteria above under 'Photo Criteria' is produced for inclusion in the website.)
Target size: original
Scale: 100% in preview, then 400% for scan.
Trimming: On
Unsharp mask filter: Checked
Descreening filter: Unchecked (unless screened original)
Grain reduction: Checked
Dust removal: Checked

Scanning: Go to Photoshop <File <Import <Epson 4490 Perfection <check settings <preview <select area to scan with marquee tool <adjust scaling as desired <scan <crop and adjust as needed in Photoshop <save as tiff. If you don't have the driver necessary to scan directly from Photoshop or other image software, one can scan by activating the scanner software and following the scan, open the resulting file in Photoshop or other program.
